This is a great recipe to use when needing to feed a large crowd on a small budget. Everyone loves it and it couldn’t be easier. If you have a small crowd, adjust the ingredients accordingly.
Ingredients:
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1 green pepper, chopped
- 1 1/2 tspn garlic, minced
- 3 C Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP)
- 1 T McKay’s beef style seasoning
- 3 C boiling water
- 2 – 15 oz cans diced tomatoes
- 2 – 8 oz cans tomato paste
- 3 – 15 oz cans kidney beans, rinsed and drained
- 2 T chili powder
- 1 tspn cumin
- Garlic salt to taste
- Water
Preparation:
- Combine TVP, beef-style seasoning and boiling water. Let stand for 10 minutes.
- Water saute onion, green pepper and garlic in a small sauce pan until tender.
- Combine all ingredients in a large pan or crock pot.
- Add water until it is the desired thickness.
- Adjust seasonings to taste. Heat thoroughly and enjoy.

Please note: Although I have several recipes that include TVP, it’s not very often that I include it on my personal menus, opting for less-processed foods. When I do want that texture, what I have started doing lately is chopping up soy curls and using that instead. Soy curls are a whole, unprocessed, non-GMO food that gives the same texture as TVP. You can also find non-GMO or organic TVP at many health food stores.
